Two Mountains in One: Why the Route Matters
Everyone talks about the sunrise from Adam's Peak (Sri Pada) — the 2,243 m sacred summit, the sea of cloud, the famous triangular shadow. But long before dawn there's a decision that shapes your whole climb: which route do you take up the mountain? Sri Pada has six traditional pathways, and the two main ones are so different they feel like two separate mountains. This guide compares them in detail — steps, distance, time and elevation — so you can pick the right one.
Already sorted on the route and just want prices, hotels and a guided tour? Head to our companion Adam's Peak destination page, which has round-trip day-tour taxi fares from 30 hotels, the best months for sunrise and our guided-tour booking. This post is the deep dive on the trails themselves.
The Routes at a Glance
Approximate figures for the three walkable routes (the other three are minor spurs that join Palabaddala):
| Route | Start town | Length (1-way)* | Ascent time* | Character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hatton–Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) | Hatton | ~5–5.5 km | ~2.5–4 hrs | Shortest & steepest; best facilities & lighting; most popular. |
| Ratnapura–Palabaddala | Ratnapura | ~7–10 km | ~5–7 hrs | Long, gradual, scenic & traditional; starts much lower. |
| Kuruwita–Erathna | Kuruwita | ~10–12 km | ~6–8 hrs | Longest, most strenuous, fewest facilities; very quiet. |
*Approximate; figures vary by source and by walking pace. Use them for comparison, not precision.
📊 Distance & Ascent Time by Route
Approximate one-way length (km) and typical ascent time (hours). The Hatton route wins on speed; the Ratnapura and Kuruwita routes are longer expeditions.
Route 1: Hatton–Nallathanniya (Dalhousie)
If you've seen photos of pilgrims climbing a ribbon of lights up the mountain at night, this is the route. Starting from the village of Nallathanniya (Dalhousie), reached via the tea town of Hatton, it is the shortest path to the summit — around 5 km shorter than the alternatives — and the steepest. It's also the best developed: during the December–May season the whole staircase is lit through the night and lined with tea shops for hot drinks and rest.
The trade-off for being short is that it is relentlessly up — thousands of steps, commonly counted at over 5,000, gaining more than a kilometre of height in a few hours. A reasonably fit walker reaches the top in about 2.5–4 hours. Because it's the quickest way to the sunrise and served by the nearest towns (Hatton, Dickoya, Maskeliya) and Nuwara Eliya, it is the route used by the vast majority of visitors and by almost every guided day tour.
Route 2: Ratnapura–Palabaddala
The Ratnapura–Palabaddala route is the old soul of the mountain — the traditional pilgrim path, and the second most popular. Starting near Ratnapura (the "City of Gems") at the Palabaddala trailhead, it is much longer and far more gradual than the Hatton climb, and it begins at a considerably lower elevation — which means you gain a lot more height overall and spend a lot more time on your feet (roughly 5–7 hours up).
What you get for the extra effort is scenery and solitude: forested slopes, mountain streams and waterfalls, and a quieter, more contemplative climb. It's better suited to fitter hikers and traditional pilgrims than to someone simply chasing a quick sunrise. A time-honoured combination is to go up the Hatton route in the dark and come down the Ratnapura route in daylight to enjoy its views.
⛰️ Elevation Profiles: Hatton vs Ratnapura
Schematic ascent from each trailhead to the 2,243 m summit. Ratnapura–Palabaddala starts far lower and climbs a much greater height over a longer distance; Hatton–Nallathanniya is a shorter, sharper rise.
The Quieter Routes: Kuruwita & the Minor Paths
Beyond the big two, a third walkable trail climbs from Kuruwita via Erathna. It is longer, more strenuous, harder to reach and the least supported by tea shops and facilities — but for exactly those reasons it is beautifully quiet, and it appeals to hikers who want a wilder, more challenging route.
The remaining three pathways — Murraywatte, Mookuwatte and Malimboda — are seldom used. Each climbs partway up the Ratnapura side before joining the main Palabaddala trail, after which climbers finish on the Palabaddala route. Unless you're a pilgrim following a specific tradition, you'll almost certainly use Hatton or Ratnapura.
Which Route Should You Choose?
- First climb, or here for the sunrise? Take Hatton–Nallathanniya — shortest, best lit, most tea shops, closest to the hill-country hotels.
- Fit hiker who wants scenery & solitude? The Ratnapura–Palabaddala route rewards you with waterfalls, forest and far fewer people.
- Want the traditional pilgrim experience? Do the classic combination: up Hatton in the dark, down Ratnapura by day (arrange transport at both trailheads).
- Craving a real challenge, away from everyone? Consider Kuruwita–Erathna — long, tough and quiet.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many routes are there up Adam's Peak?
There are six traditional pathways. The two main ones are Hatton–Nallathanniya (Dalhousie) and Ratnapura–Palabaddala; a third, quieter route climbs from Kuruwita via Erathna. The other three — Murraywatte, Mookuwatte and Malimboda — are seldom used and join the Palabaddala trail partway up.
What's the difference between the Hatton and Ratnapura routes?
Hatton–Nallathanniya is the shortest and steepest (about 5 km shorter than the alternatives), best developed and most popular. Ratnapura–Palabaddala is much longer, more gradual and starts far lower, so you climb more overall — it's more strenuous and scenic, and is the traditional pilgrim path.
Which route is easiest?
The Hatton–Nallathanniya route, because it's the shortest — about 2.5–4 hours up for a reasonably fit walker, even though it's steep. Ratnapura and Kuruwita are longer and much more demanding.
How many steps and how long is the climb?
All routes are thousands of cement and stone steps (the Hatton route is commonly counted at over 5,000). Hatton is ~5–5.5 km and ~2.5–4 hrs up; Ratnapura is ~7–10 km and ~5–7 hrs because it starts far lower.
What are Murraywatte, Mookuwatte and Malimboda?
Three seldom-used minor paths on the Ratnapura side that climb partway before joining the main Palabaddala trail to the summit. They have few facilities and are rarely used by visitors.
Is it traditional to go up one route and down another?
Yes — a classic pattern is up the shorter, lit Hatton route before dawn, then down the longer, scenic Ratnapura route by day. It needs transport arranged at two trailheads, which a private driver can handle.
Which route should first-timers choose?
Hatton–Nallathanniya — shortest, most tea shops, lit in season and served by the nearest towns and Nuwara Eliya. Most guided day tours, including TaxiGo's, use this trailhead.
Can TaxiGo arrange transport and a guide?
Yes. TaxiGo runs guided Adam's Peak day tours with a guide who has summited 2,500+ times, and provides fixed-fare transfers to Nallathanniya (or to two trailheads for the up-one-down-another route). See our Adam's Peak destination page for prices, or book on Viator.
